ECO-UNESCO boards Japan’s Peace Boat
ECO-UNESCO’s National Director, Elaine Nevin, welcomed representatives from Japan’s Peace Boat to Ireland on Monday 14th June, having joined the ship last week in Helsinki to support its work in education for peace and sustainability.
ECO-UNESCO was invited on board to share its innovative work in environmental leadership with international participants on board through a series of lectures and workshops.
Peace Boat travels the world on peace voyages. The ship is a neutral, mobile space that allows people to engage across borders in dialogue and mutual cooperation both at sea, and in the ports that it visits. This year the theme for their world voyage is nuclear disarmament.
“ECO-UNESCO is a Peace Boat partner and is delighted to be supporting this long-running initiative, and supporting the Peace Boat in its work on education for peace and sustainability. I will be running a series of environmental lectures and workshops on board to share experience of Ireland’s environmental problems and solutions. Focusing on waste, energy and climate change I will be hoping to gain insight into innovative Japanese environmental solutions also” commented National Director of ECO-UNESCO, Elaine Nevin, who will be travelling on board for the week leading up to the Peace Boat’s Dublin stop.
ECO-UNESCO is Ireland's environmental education and youth organisation. The organisation aims to raise environmental awareness, promote the protection and conservation of the environment and to promote the personal development of young people.
As ECO-UNESCO’s work has been cited as an example of best practice in Education for Sustainable Development for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable development by the UNECE this voyage presents an opportunity for shared learning and cooperation between two of the leading European and Asian NGOs working on the issues surrounding sustainable development.
On Wednesday 22nd September ECO-UNESCO will be holding a conference on Education for Sustainable Development Youth for the Future: Learning to change our world at its Dublin headquarters The Greenhouse, 17 St Andrew Street, Dublin 2.

Toyota and ECO-UNESCO drive towards sustainable mobility
ECO-UNESCO was delighted to announce a new partnership with Toyota this month.
As the first step in their new partnership, Toyota provided ECO-UNESCO with a ECO-friendly Prius, and announced that it will also sponsor a prize at the ECO-UNESCO Young Environmental Awards.
Reflecting Toyota’s environmental leadership in the drive towards sustainable mobility, the provision of a Toyota Prius to ECO-UNESCO will support the organisation’s policy of environmentally friendly transport. The third generation hybrid Prius delivers unprecedented reductions in CO2 emissions of just 89g/km – a figure unmatched by any other family car.
As an official partner Toyota's aim is to make a positive contribution to ECO-UNESCO’s work empowering young people to make a difference to our environment. To this end Toyota will sponsor the Club of the Year Award at the annual ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards. These Awards are held each spring to recognise the outstanding green achievements of young people from youth groups and schools across Ireland. The Showcase and Awards Ceremony will take place in the Mansion house on May 12th this year.
“We are delighted that ECO-UNESCO and Toyota are working together in this way. ECO-UNESCO is looking forward to building a strong partnership with Toyota Ireland and see this sponsorship of the eco-friendly Prius as the first step in this. ECO-UNESCO’s national remit is raising environmental awareness in Ireland’s young people as well as promoting practical lifestyle options; we see this mutually beneficial relationship as furthering this goal.” said Elaine Nevin, National Director of ECO-UNESCO.
Louise Murphy, Marketing Executive, Toyota Ireland commented:
“Toyota Ireland is very proud to be supporting the work of ECO-UNESCO. For Toyota, minimizing environmental impact continues to be a top priority at every level of the company’s organisation and activity. This partnership aims to support the work carried out by ECO-UNESCO in promoting the protection and conservation of the environment by young people.”

ECO-UNESCO at the White House!
Green is definitely the colour of the day as President Obama invites leader of Irish environmental organisation ECO-UNESCO to White House on St. Patricks Day.
One common theme unites the diverse representatives of Irish society invited to the St. Patricks Day reception at the White House this year: innovation. This is the hallmark of ECO-UNESCO, whose innovative programmes range from the Young Environmentalist Awards to drugs prevention using environmental and outdoor education - and the invitation of the organisation’s Director shows that appreciation of its innovative approach goes right to the top.
“President Obama has shown a commitment to environmental protection, and ECO-UNESCO is proud that its role as a leader in the field of innovative environmental education has been recognised with this invitation to the White House St. Patrick’s Day reception” said Elaine Nevin, Director of ECO-UNESCO.
ECO-UNESCO is Ireland’s environmental education and youth organisation affiliated to the World Federation of UNESCO clubs, centres and associations. It works to raise awareness and understanding of our environment through the personal development of young people.
“We have always prided ourselves on developing innovative approaches to environmental protection” continues Elaine Nevin. “Through our programs we encourage young people to express their innovative spirit in everything from fashion shows to film-making in a bid to raise awareness of the issues around sustainable development and the environment.”
This invitation to Washington shows the high regard in which organisations working with communities and young people are held. Through ECO-UNESCO, the environmental actions of committed young Irish people will be recognised in the political capital of the world.

ECO-UNESCO’s Youth for Sustainable Development Peer Education programme
ECO-UNESCO is starting the next round of our peer education programme in March.
We are seeking 16 young people aged 15-18, living in Dublin, to join this new round of the ‘Youth for Sustainable Development’ peer education programme. Do you work with any young people who may be interested?
The initial phase of the programme runs from March to May - every week either on a Wednesday evening or Saturday for 12 weeks.
The programme over the last year has been a big success and has resulted in the current peer educators getting funding to create a short documentary on cultural diversity in Ireland.
We’ll be kicking off with an open evening from 5pm-7pm on March 3rd. The open evening will be a chance for all the young people interested in joining the programme to get a taster of what it will be like and make up their minds about joining.

The Wave!
ECO-UNESCO at The Wave!
On Saturday 5th December, 30 of ECO-UNESCO’s young peer-educators in training took part in The Wave. The young people are involved in ECO-UNESCO’s Youth for Sustainable Development Peer Education Programme.
The group used all their creativity to mobilise their peers for Saturday 5 December 2009 when, just ahead of the crucial UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen, thousands of people from all walks of life flooded the streets of Dublin to demonstrate their support for a fair and safe climate future for all.
The Wave!
The Wave, organised by the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, was a demonstration of mass support for a better, low carbon future for Ireland and the world.
We want the Irish Government to show leadership at Copenhagen. We want them to PROTECT THE POOREST and ACT NOW to inspire the agreement the world needs. As part of a global series of public actions, The Irish Wave called on our government to take urgent action to secure a fair international agreement to stop global warming exceeding the danger threshold of 2°C. We call on world leaders to support developing countries to cope with the impacts of climate change now and in the future.
ECO-UNESCO helped to make this Ireland's biggest ever demonstration in support of action on climate change.

Intercultural Youth Group Volunteer for Peace and Environment in Greystones
This week, sixteen young people from diverse cultural backgrounds will gather in Greystones to take part in a 6-day peace and environment residential programme organised by ECO-UNESCO and Voluntary Service International.
Young people aged 16-19 from Ireland, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Congo, Rwanda, India, Nepal, Ghana and Iraq will become Peer Educators after taking part in workshops on peace, environment and sustainability.
"ECO-UNESCO is delighted to be a part of the youth residential programme with Voluntary Service International," said ECO-UNESCO National Director, Elaine Nevin. "We are excited about the possibilities of bringing together such diverse young people and look forward to seeing how they work in their own communities after completing the programme."
During the programme, young people will learn about the environment through hands-on activities and a volunteer project with the Greystones Tidy Town Committee. They will contribute to the community by creating a mural on Greystones Beach and clearing the walkways in Kindlestown Woods.
After completing the programme, the young participants will become Peer Educators, leading environmental action projects and raising awareness in their own communities.
The weeklong residential programme utilises ECO-UNESCO’s ECO-Youth Choices Peer Education Programme, an alternative drug misuse prevention programme. By using environmental education as a resource, young people learn life skills and how to be stronger leaders among their peers.
The programme is a joint initiative of ECO-UNESCO’s ECO-Youth Choices Peer Education Programme and the Teenage Programme of Voluntary Service International. The aim of the programme is to bring young people of diverse backgrounds together to examine global and local issues of peace, sustainability and the environment.

Education Key to Sustainable Future Says ECO-UNESCO
National organisation applauds the recognition of young people in Bonn Declaration of Education for Sustainable Development at UNESCO World Conference
Over 700 people and 50 government ministers representing 150 countries adopted the Bonn Declaration at the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development in Bonn (Germany), on 2 April 2009. ECO-UNESCO, Ireland's environmental education and youth organisation, attended the prestigious conference.
Speaking from Bonn, Elaine Nevin National Director of ECO-UNESCO said, "There are hundreds of people from all over the globe sharing ideas on how education systems can create a more sustainable world. Education is one of the key ways we can address global environmental challenges, like Climate Change."
The Bonn Declaration strengthens the role of UNESCO and Member States implementing national strategies during the final half of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2015).
"When we go home, we cannot go on with business as usual," said Mary Joy Pigozzi, member of the UNESCO High Level Panel on the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. "Education is one of humankind's most powerful institutions. We have to reengineer our education systems."
Over the next five years, the Bonn Declaration calls on national organisations to "involve youth in the design and implementation of Education for Sustainable Development; to engage the commitment, solidarity and potential of youth and their organisations and networks in enhancing Education for Sustainable Development and fostering young people's ownership of Education for Sustainable Development questions and issues."
"ECO-UNESCO is delighted that the Bonn Declaration recognises the important role of young people in achieving sustainability," commented Elaine Nevin. "At ECO-UNESCO we have seen first hand how environmental education and Education for Sustainable Development can empower young people."
"While many countries represented at the conference have begun to implement Education for Sustainable Development strategies, Ireland has yet to finalise its National Strategy," explains Elaine Nevin. "Ireland must adopt and implement the National Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development so that we can join the rest of the world in promoting the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development."
The UNESCO World Conference is a mid-term review of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2015), resulting in the adoption of the Bonn Declaration on Education for Sustainable Development to be submitted to the Executive Board and General Conference of UNESCO. Fifty high-ranking government ministers attended to discuss implementation of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Develop with statements of support presented from Bangladesh, Cameroon, Egypt, Mali, Iran and Serbia.
Education for Sustainable Development is seen as a critical tool in creating a more sustainable environment. It examines the various social, economic and environmental factors that underpin poverty reduction, civic participation and governance both locally and globally. In Ireland, the discussion paper on National Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development was launched in December 2007.

ECO-UNESCO on Cutting Edge of ESD
Last week, National Director Elaine Nevin presented at the "Rethinking Education in Light of Climate Change" conference, organised by Cultivate in association with ECO-UNESCO, Sustainable Projects Ireland, and Tipperary Institute.
During her presentation, "What's So Hot About Climate Change? Educating Young People", Elaine shared her experience with 2nd and 3rd level educators and other youth based organisations. There was a high level of interest in ECO-UNESCO's approach to Education for Sustainable Development, showing that we are on the cutting edge of ESD.
ECO-UNESCO’s work in peer education, the Young Environmentalist Awards Programme, and the National Youth ECO-Forum were all highlighted as exciting, interesting, and effective ways of engaging young people on Climate Change and other environmental issues.
Our strong presence at the conference – alongside sustainable development experts, policy makers, and organisations like Trocaire, Irish Aid, Comhar, and Change.ie–is part of our mission to pursue best practices in Education for Sustainable Development.
We see ESD as an integral way of addressing the Climate Change challenge, and look forward to implementing new techniques learned at the conference to our future work.

ECO-UNESCO is 21!
Ireland’s Environmental Education and Youth Organisation celebrates 21 years of innovation, empowerment and environmental conservation.
ECO-UNESCO, Ireland's environmental education and youth organisation, is celebrating on Thursday, 22nd November 2007 their 21st Anniversary by holding an exhibition at Filmbase, in Temple Bar. The event will be officially opened by the Minister for Youth Affairs Seán Haughey, T.D. and will showcase the work carried out by the organisation during the past twenty-one years.
Everything started in 1984, when a group of young people interested in carrying out environmental protection got together and started an UNESCO club. A year later the ECO Club became a member of the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) and was admitted into the Department of Education’s Youth Service Grant as part of the celebration of International Youth Year. In 1986, ECO-UNESCO was officially founded.
"We are delighted to celebrate this special date with the ones who contributed to the development and growth of the organisation during all those years. It's impressive to see the magnificent work done not only by the staff but also volunteers ands most importantly young people." Comments Elaine Nevin, ECO-UNESCO's National Director.
During the following twenty-one years, ECO-UNESCO has developed and delivered numerous environmental programmes mainly aimed at young people but also at leaders and teachers to support them on introducing environmental education in their activities with young people. The organisation has also produced a series of education resources, which explore a wide range of environmental issues.
One of ECO-UNESCO's trademarks is their innovative approach to environmental education focusing on the needs of young people. The results are the development of successful programmes such as the Young Environmentalist Awards, ECO-UNESCO clubs, the ECO Youth Representatives and most recently the ECO-Choices Programme, which provides an alternative approach to dugs prevention through environmental education.
ECO-UNESCO has also worked as advocates for environmental education and education for sustainable development (ESD) having undertaken a research project on ESD in partnership with COMHAR and more recently has worked on the development of a national strategy on EDS on behalf of the Department of Education and Science.
As part of the 21st Anniversary celebrations ECO-UNESCO is also producing an Anniversary Report, which will be available soon for download on this web site. For further information on ECO-UNESCO, contact us on +353 1 6625491 or at info@ecounesco.ie.

ECO-Choices Programme
Minister Pat Carey launches ECO-UNESCO’s ECO-Choices, an environmental youth programme for drugs prevention
Minister Pat Carey officially launched ECO-UNESCO’s ECO-Choices, an environmental youth programme for drugs prevention, on Thursday, 18th October 2007 in the Dublin Writers Museum, 18 Parnell Street, Dublin 1.
ECO-UNESCO’s ECO-Choices is an innovative drugs prevention programme for young people where their energy can be channelled into positive action, empowering them to improve and protect themselves, others and their environment. The programme includes a resource pack, a training programme for teachers and leaders working with young people and a peer-education programme aimed at young people aged between 15 and 18 years old.
"ECO-UNESCO recognises that the environment provides an important medium for developing positive attitudes and for empowering young people. We are committed to providing opportunities for young people to channel their energy into positive actions for themselves and their environment." Comments Elaine Nevin, ECO-UNESCO’s National Director.
The programme, which was developed by ECO-UNESCO, Ireland’s environmental education and youth organisation and funded under the Young Peoples Facilities and Services Fund by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, is based on empowerment, positive action, personal development and environmental protection.
"Drug Prevention Education is more than teaching the facts about drugs - it is teaching children and youth about themselves and empowering them to contribute to the development of their community, environment and society. This initiative, funded by the Young People's Facilities and Services Fund, encourages young people to look at alternatives to drug and alcohol misuse. I have always believed in the development of recreational facilities and programmes that attract young people into healthy pursuits." Comments Minister Carey, Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs
For further information on the ECO-Choices Programme, please contact ECO-UNESCO on +353 1 6625491 or at info@ecounesco.ie.

This year, an exciting new training opportunity is available to all registered YEA 2008 leaders and teachers. The training will take place in September and October and early registration is advisable, as places are limited. Young people registered in the YEA 2008 will also have the chance to attend workshops aimed at helping get their projects underway.
‘It’s all systems go at ECO-UNESCO as we get ready for our ninth Young Environmentalist Awards. We’re very excited about this years’ Awards as the number of projects is growing every year especially entrants from youth groups and schools from Northern Ireland. We are also delighted to offer new training opportunities for teachers and leaders who want to upskill and get new ideas of how to work with young people on environmental issues. Our website, www.ecounesco.ie, is proving highly popular where groups can access information and register for the awards online’ comments Elaine Nevin, ECO-UNESCO’s National Director.
ECO-UNESCO, Ireland’s environmental education and youth organisation, will be showcasing the short-listed projects that took part in the Young Environmentalist Awards 2007 in an exhibition from 27th August to 21st September in ENFO, 17, St. Andrew’s Street, Dublin 2. The projects displayed tackled various environmental issues through video, fashion, woodwork and wildlife gardening to name a few. This is a great opportunity to view some of the most innovative and impressive environmental projects carried by Irish youth in 2007 and get inspired for the awards in 2008.

ECO-UNESCO and Scissor Sisters team up for the environment
ECO-UNESCO and the Scissor Sisters team up for the environment on 9th November, at the band’s concert at the Point Theatre, in Dublin. The American band is on tour and has selected local NGOs to be promoted at their gigs in the UK and Ireland.
ECO-UNESCO, Ireland’s environmental education and youth organisation was chosen by the band to be the representative in Ireland for its work in environmental education with children and young people. The organisation is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and continues to lead the way in environmental education with its innovative approach to engaging young people in practical environmental actions.
ECO-UNESCO and Scissor Sisters are working together to raise environmental awareness amongst young people and show that taking part in environmental issues can be fun. The organisation will have space at the venue to exhibit their projects and the whole idea is to create activities to interact with the public. “We are planning interactive and fun activities to enable everyone in the concert to give their contribution to the environment. This project shows that the music industry as well as others targeting young people can boost environmental and social causes by implementing simple ideas.” Comments Elaine Nevin, ECO-UNESCO’s National Director.

ECO-UNESCO and Repak promote the first Irish representation in Youth Eco-Parliament this October, in Paris
For the first time, Ireland will be represented at the Pro Europe Youth Eco-Parliament (YEP), which runs this year from October 18th to 20th in Paris. YEP is an international environmental education project with the aim of encouraging sustainable development among young people with 170 students from 14 national delegations attending the three-day event. Three participants from the ECO-UNESCO Youth Representatives Programme Aoife Samblin, (St. Dominic’s College), Jason O’Connor and Graham Murphy from Greenhills College, Dublin will represent Ireland at this prestigious Repak/ECO-Unecso sponsored event.
As members of the official Irish delegation, Aoife, Jason and Graham will contribute to an open letter on the environment that will be debated by the participants and submitted to a plenary session of the 3rd International Green Dot Recycling Congress being held in Paris to coincide with the YEP. The young people will also participate in different roundtable discussions and workshops during the course of the Congress.
Elaine Nevin, ECO-UNESCO’s National Director comments “ECO-UNESCO is proud to be part of the first Irish representation in the Youth Eco Parliament and delighted to be working with Repak on this. We’ve been working with the three young people for 4 months on the completion of the YEP tasks and we are looking forward to the Irish young people voicing their environmental concerns on the European stage.” In preparation for the trip each national delegation made a submission via a dedicated website (http://www.eyep.info) on an area of vital environmental interest and different online discussion forums were developed to allow students to communicate with their peers in other countries. The Irish delegation concentrated their efforts on an open letter addressed to Public Authorities emphasizing the need for sustainability of all the elements required for the preservation of our common European environment for future generations.
The Irish students are part of the ECO-UNESCO Youth Representatives Programme, which aims at empowering young people to become peer educators and Eco-Youth Representatives. The programme targets transition year students and consists of a series of workshops and excursions focusing on young people’s environmental concerns.
