ECO-YOUTH CHOICES

ECO-Youth Choices is an alternative Drug Prevention Education programme using holistic Environmental Education as a resource. Participants learn how to channel their energy into positive action on personal, community & environmental levels.

Participants will be invited to take a critical look at their surroundings and assess how these influence them; discuss how to improve them; and act by putting into practice an environmental action-project.

The programme operates on three levels:

1. Formal Education: SocialPersonalHealthEducation ECO-Youth CHOICES
(SPHE ECO-Youth CHOICES)

Workshops (WS):
WS1: Enhancing Self Awareness- Building Self Confidence
WS2: Understanding influences
WS3: Attitudes and Values
WS4: Decision-Making/Consequence Learning
WS5: Assertive Communication
WS6: Relationships
WS7: Value & Respect for Diversity
WS8: Importance of Physical & Emotional Health
WS9: Exploring Substance Use to Misuse
WS10: Commitment to Sustaining Change

Workshops can be delivered to schools around Dublin either in ten forty-minute sessions or alternatively in 5 eighty-minute sessions to a maximum of 30 young people aged between 12 & 14.

2. ECO-Youth CHOICES

This training programme is open to participants aged 15 to 21. It is particularly suitable for Youth Reach settings, youth community groups & anybody else with an interest in life, social & environmental skills development.

By the end of the training programme participants should feel confident knowing

• What Self Awareness has to do with Self Confidence
• How our surroundings (both natural & social) have an influence on our lives
• How our values influence our attitudes
• What decision-making has to do with thinking in past, present & future
• What the differences between Passive, Aggressive & Assertive forms of communication are
• How where we live impacts on our relationships with others
• Why it is important to Value and Respect Diversity
• How to keep physically & emotionally healthy
• How Drug misuse effects a person, family, community and how to prevent it
• How to plan an Action project

3. Peer Education ECO-Youth CHOICES

Participants who have completed either level 1 (SPHE ECO-Youth CHOICES) or level 2 (ECO-Youth CHOICES) can become ECO-UNESCO Peer Educator facilitators.

By the end of the training programme participants should feel confident to know

• How to solve problems
• How to plan and manage a project
• How to build and work in a team
• How to communicate effectively
• How to facilitate group workshops to Peers
• Why there is a link between Low Self-esteem/ confidence and problematic Drug Misuse

Schools/Youth groups
Programmes can be delivered to groups on demand. However capacity for delivery is limited.

Youths (14 to 21 years old)
At any time interested young people aged 14 to 21 may either join an existing group or set up their own Peer group (minimum 6 participants) and ECO-UNESCO delivers the programme for free to you.
